I am moving from “Uncertainty” in chapter 3 to “Influence” in chapter 4.
EXCERPT:
“Human Beings are created with the capacity to influence and be influenced. This is inherent in that we are created as relational beings. It is heightened by the reality that we are not simply intellectual but emotional creatures. Influence can be a great thing, especially when we distinguish it from manipulation. Manipulation is the use of influence to control others for personal gain. It’s the dark side of influence.” Chasing Daylight pg. 108
REFLECTION:
We all have so many stories about influencing or being influenced by others.
Some of mine were in junior high like when our group of friends started a shoplifting syndicate in the local stores for a certain type of chocolate bar. A stupid idea but one kid believed in the vision enough to influence the rest of to go along with it.
There is also nothing like have young kids who mirror your every move to remind you just how much influence you carry as a parent!
Almost all the stories that come to mind when we think of the word “influence” are usually negative. It’s easy to forget the positive side of influence.
Everything we say and do influences the people around us whether we like it or not. The question comes down to whether we will influence them for the good or for the bad.
I’ve heard you can’t give what you don’t have. When it comes to influencing the world for God I think that is sometimes true. If you and me are not seeking the Lord, how can we expect them to taste and see Jesus through our lives. How can we get to the place where it’s not even our words or actions leading people to God but our shadows!
Acts 5:12-15 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.
PRAYER:
God draw us into your presence so we can know you. May your aroma follow us into our day. May we get to the place of anointing where even our shadows have the power to influence people. Amen
